Regional Catalyst for SSP Communications

20120720-2012_Goodrich_Photos_DSC0217-1Bethany Goodrich is the Regional Catalyst of Communications for the Sustainable Southeast Partnership. Bethany’s host organization is the Sitka Conservation Society. She is a wandering conservationist with field experience working with wildlife, diatoms and humans in Antarctica, Alaska, California and Africa. She holds a masters degree in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management from the University of Oxford’s School of Geography and the Environment and  a bachelors of science in Biology with minors in Fine Arts and Neuroscience from the University of San Francisco.  Upon graduating from her undergraduate work in 2011, Bethany headed to a remote field station on the Antarctic peninsula where she worked for five months as a marine biology research assistant and outreach specialist. She first experienced the Tongass while working with the Sitka Conservation Society as a storytelling intern in 2012. She reluctantly left to pursue her masters degree in merry old England. Her thesis investigated how commodity crops influence human-elephant relations among cocoa farmers in South Central Ghana.

She is now happily rooted in Southeast Alaska where she focuses on how storytelling and communications can empower communities and connect with relevant policy.  She works with community leaders and partners such as the US Forest Service, to seek out and strategically showcase progressive projects throughout the region. She uses multimedia coverage (e.g. short video, photo journalist stories, traditional print and policy pages)  and is constantly seeking new and creative methods and tools for effectively sharing stories. By promoting projects that build sustainable community capacity and maintain and restore ecological health, her goals are to encourage wide scale change and positively influence how communities, policies and institutions operate in Southeast Alaska.
