Gather Southeast Overview

The Gather Southeast App is live and ready to download from the Apple and Google app stores. The purpose of the app is to provide community members with maps that they can use to find resources for their use and report on stewardship needs or stewardship actions they complete. The app includes links to downloadable resource maps built out for the Keex’ Kwaan Community Forest Partnership (KKCFP) and Hoonah Native Forest Partnership (HNFP) project areas but the app can be used anywhere across Southeast Alaska, including when you are out of range of cell service if you download the offline maps for your area. The Gather Southeast App has been developed through a partnership between SSP, Colorado Mountain Club, Cana and Ecotrust.

Here are screenshots that show the first three maps we have made available for Hoonah and Kake: Land and Road Status, Marine Resources and Plants as Food and Medicine.

In addition to the mapping features, there are built in forms that provide users with a way to record stewardship needs (e.g. trail clearing, trash cleanup, potholes in the road, plugged culverts, etc.) as well as recording resources gathered (e.g. gallons of berries, number of fish and shellfish, deer, moose, etc.). These reports can be made available to land managers at tribal corporations and the USFS or kept private for personal use. When residents report stewardship needs and resource use, land managers can better plan to maintain or enhance access to the resources that communities rely on.

Here are examples of the Quick Assessment, Gathering Report and Stewardship Report.
