Woven: Peoples & Place Issue 03, You have to hold on to the rope when the wind blows hard

Published in 2026 / Southeast Alaska / Sustainable Southeast Partnership

Themed after a Shm’algyack phrase borrowed humbly from the Dictionary of Shm’algyack by Donna May Roberts “Shguu mdm dackya’wa hagwilhoo dsihla ‘dsuu baashg”, “You have to hold on to the rope when the wind blows hard,” Woven: Peoples & Place is the annual magazine of the SSP. Built entirely in-house by storytellers across the SSP, the third edition of Woven brings together 12 writers, more than 30 partner organizations, and voices from 11 communities.

While you can not control the wind, you can control your anchor. This year’s theme is a reminder of the power held in interlocking communities — in weaving the rope — through relationships, shared experiences, successful projects, and unsuccessful attempts. It also honors the significance of threading together generations, disciplines, and geographies. That rope, carefully tethered to the shores of Southeast Alaska like a holdfast, is what we rely on when the weather shakes us. The stories held in these pages show how the people, partners, and communities of Southeast Alaska, remain steady in tumultuous times while looking ahead.
