Community: Wrangell
Wrangell, a community of roughly 2,000 situated on Wrangell Island at the mouth of the Stikine River, the fastest free-flowing river in North America, is Shtax’héen Ḵwáan territory, homeland of the Stikine Tlingit. Over the last few centries, Wrangell has endured Russian, British, and American occupation that made Wrangell the only Alaskan city to have flown four flags. The Tlingit name, Ḵaachx̱ana.áakʼw, translates to “Little Lake on Ḵaachx̱an”. Wrangell has a poignant political history defending Indigenous sovereignty and continues to exploring ways to highlight its rich culture and utilize natural resources.
