On the third Thursday of each month from 9:00-10:00am AKST, the Southeast Village Fisheries Collective, a coalition of regional organizations and community members, hosts a virtual learning session to empower Southeast Alaskans to work together to build thriving coastal communities. Kelp farmers in rural communities in Southeast Alaska face a number of difficulties in getting their kelp to market in an affordable and market-ready manner. It is difficult for farmers and industry members to find clear and concise information about kelp drying and stabilization methods, with many methods being unsuitable for a rural farmer’s needs. This is the second in a set of reports that outlines current drying methods for seaweed and methods that are best suited for rural farmers. READ MORE >

By Koniag, Sealaska, The Nature Conservancy, Rasmuson Foundation, Spruce Root, the Sustainable Southeast Partnership This study investigates the socioeconomic and cultural impacts of fisheries access limitation programs, such as limited entry and individual fishing quotas (IFQs), on Alaska Native villages in the Gulf of Alaska. The research documents how these programs have altered local economies, disrupted cultural practices, and contributed to outmigration. A 2024 survey of over 4,300 Koniag and Sealaska shareholders and descendants reveals that fishing is a central element of economic and cultural life, with 98% of respondents affirming its importance. Applications are now open for NDN Collective’s Community Action Fund! Grants of up to $20,000 are available for Indigenous frontline organizations, groups, and individuals for direct action initiatives. The Community Action Fund (CAF) grants support direct actions and organizing efforts that are often urgent and time sensitive. CAF prioritizes frontline, grassroots and community-based efforts that defend Indigenous peoples rights, communities and nations, including responses to climate disasters.
