Community: Gustavus

Gustavus is a small community of roughly 450 people sitting at the mouth of Glacier Bay. Located within Xunaa Káawu, the territory of the Huna Tlingit, whose ancestors were displaced by advancing glaciers and then again by the establishment of the national monument. Today, that relationship is being restored. The Xunaa Shuká Hít, the Huna Ancestors’ House, now stands inside Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve as a living declaration that this place has always had a People. Gustavus also carries a distinct homesteader spirit. Fishing, tourism, and harvest shape daily life here.
