Community: Skagway
Skagway sits in the north end of the Lynn Canal and has a population of nearly 1,200 people. Located within a lush and vibrant mountainous valley, Skagway was named “a windy place with white caps on the water” or “the place where the north wind blows” by the Tlingit. Skagway is filled with many gold-rush era buildings and home to The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad which runs past the famously steep Chilkoot trail pictured on the Alaska license plate. Skagway has a thriving tourism industry and it serves as an important cross border hub with its water, rail, and road connections.
